Protect the Protectors
An Action Alert from UM Creation Justice Ministries (by Rev. Dr. Becca Edwards) Since the Trump Administration took office in January, we have heard many troubling announcements about changes made to the federal workforce. As United Methodists who feel called to work for a healthy environment and safe climate, perhaps the most troubling news has been the reduction of workforce and suspension of funding for research at two government agencies: the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration…
Call on Congress to Protect Funding for Clean Energy Projects
An Action Alert from Creation Justice Ministries. As Christians, we believe budgets are moral documents, as they demonstrate what we care about and what we are willing to invest in as a country. Right now, Congress is preparing the federal budget for the next fiscal year. As communities across the country experience harm caused by increased flooding, fires, and drought – investing clean energy is imperative to address the urgency of the climate crisis. In order to meet the moment and…
End Fossil Fuel Subsidies and Fossil Gas Expansion
GreenFaith are sending a letter to decision-makers, urging them to take right action to end fossil fuel subsidies and fossil gas expansion as a moral imperative. Every year, the oil industry receives $20 billion in Federal subsidies which pollute the air, destroy the climate, and harm communities, while enriching corporations that have knowingly caused the climate crisis. That’s $2 million every hour to one of the world’s wealthiest industries, while 2.5 million US children are homeless. This is morally obscene. The…

Earth Day is celebrated this year just two days after Easter. As I was thinking about what to say, I came across these words by Rev. Dr. Margaret Bullitt-Jonas in a sermon that she delivered in 2022.
Protect the NorthWest Forests
Trees and healthy forests have massive climate, environmental, and spiritual benefits. We need to be planting more trees and protecting our standing forests as invaluable carbon sinks. But now, the US Forest Service is proposing to open up 800,000 acres of previously protected Northwest Forest.
Oppose Cuts in Funding
Two advocacy opportunities – oppose cuts to clean energy funding and to NOAA. Oppose cuts to clean energy funding in the Inflation Reduction Act and the Infrastructure Investments and Jobs Act The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) are the most significant investments by the federal government ever made to combat climate change. Leaders in both chambers have said they want to make deep cuts or do away completely with unspent funds in the…
Make Big Oil pay for Climate Damages
This year California has a chance to pass a groundbreaking piece of climate legislation that would make polluters pay to protect our communities from the climate crisis. It’s called the Climate Superfund Bill. The companies who are responsible for these climate-fueled disasters, like the January wildfires in Los Angeles, should be the ones to pay for the damages, not California residents. It’s time for California to make polluters pay into a climate superfund that will get money to communities most in…

10 Minutes Outside
One of the goals set by the Climate Justice Ministries Task Force for this year is to encourage every church member of the the California-Nevada Annual Conference to spend 10 minutes outside each day. We firmly believe that our actions –and our energy — for earth justice work must befed and empowered by nurturing our love for God’s creation, and this simple practiceis an important step in that direction.
