Worship Resources

Below are some worship resources that those planning and leading creation themed worship may find helpful.

The UM Creation Justice Movement Library has some worship resources including liturgies, prayers and readings. There are at least 12 free worship resources listed in this library – you need to go to the library page and then click on the “worship resources” tab. The most recent resource is The Serviceberry for Season of Creation 2025.

UM Discipleship Ministries has an Easter 2025 worship series Believing into Christ that has a creation focus.

The Calvin Institute of Christian Worship has a set of worship resources including a list of hymns.

EcoPreacher 1-2-3 is a partnership between the Rev. Dr. Leah Schade and the Interfaith Center for Sustainable Development, publishers of Eco Bible, a Jewish ecological commentary on the Hebrew Scriptures. EcoPreacher 1-2-3 provides Creation-centered sermon preparation that is short, accessible, and based on a solid biblical foundation. There is a brief “eco-exegesis” for interpreting a Hebrew text from the Revised Common Lectionary for that Sunday. This is followed by one “eco idea” for the basis of the sermon, two “eco questions” to go deeper, and three “eco actions” to choose from to help a congregation put their faith into action. With this resource, preachers can use the sermon ideas in their own context and make it relevant for their congregation.

Creation Justice Ministries offers a Green Lectionary podcast, a conversation on scripture with a creation justice lens based on the liturgical seasons of Lent & Easter, Earth Day, Ocean Month, Season of Creation, and Advent.

Season of Creation – the annual Christian celebration of prayer and action for our common home – 1st September to 4th October, 2025 – Theme: Peace with Creation. This is an ecumenical program.

A search on Earth Day or World Environment Day sermons and prayers will also turn up lots of other resources.

Hymns

As United Methodists, we sing about our faith, and you can find many hymns about creation in the United Methodist Hymnal, The Faith We Sing and Worship & Song. There are also modern hymnwriters who have written some great contemporary lyrics that are not in those hymnals:

Carolyn Winfrey Gillette is a Presbyterian pastor and hymn writer. Her modern hymns, set to traditional tunes, are freely available – look under creation in her topical index.

Jim & Jean Strathdee from our Cal-Nev United Methodist Conference have written and recorded a lot of social justice songs over the past 60 years. Some of these are available as free sing-along videos.

Dan Damon, a retired UM ordained elder (pastor) from our Cal-Nev United Methodist Conference, is is an internationally published writer of hymn texts and tunes. He also has some sing-along videos and his hymns are available from Hope Publishing Company.

Jubilate Hymns have a selection of Hymns for our Contemporary World.

Wild Goose Publications is the publishing house of the Iona Community established in the Celtic tradition of St. Columba. They have a section of downloadable e-liturgies and prayers plus audio and sheet music downloads, many of which have a creation focus.

Below are some modern hymnwriters who have written creation themed songs. Please let us know of any others that you would like added to the list.

Prayers

Pray and Fast for the Climate is a movement of Christians praying and fasting on the 1st of each month for climate justice. They started off in the UK, but now include people from around the world. They produce a set of monthly prayer points. These could be used in a variety of ways including in prayers of intercession in Sunday worship services.
