The Holy Spirit is bringing something new! On September 1st, 2026 the church celebrates a new holy day, the Feast of Creation! For United Methodist calendars, this day will be called Creation in Christ Sunday. This new holy day comes about through the prayerful discernment of the world-wide Christian Church. It falls at the beginning of the Season of Creation, the annual Christian celebration of prayer and action for our common home from September 1st to October 4th.
Grounded in an ancient liturgical tradition of the Eastern Orthodox Church, this is a day to praise God as Creator and ponder the great mystery that everything was created through Christ. And, as a result, it also inspires us to care for the gift of the created world.
The Consultation on Common Texts has officially added the “Feast of Creation in Christ” to the Revised Common Lectionary used by many Protestant churches. This is the first time a new feast is adopted by the common lectionary since its 1983 release (when Baptism of the Lord and Christ the King were adopted). Celebrations will begin in 2026.

Hosted by the Center for Ecumenical and Interreligious Engagement at Seattle University and its partners, including some from the United Methodist Creation Justice Movement worship team, this service draws on the new lectionary texts and diverse theological liturgical resources. The Worship Team of the United Methodist Creation Justice Movement (UMCJM) is offering an all new worship series for the Season of Creation called Salt+Soil+Seawater which includes this new celebration, with worship notes, liturgies, and a six week adult study guide.
